Some people still don't recognize that this Best Picture nomination is one of the most visionary and fully realized sci-fi films of our times. Producer Peter Jackson gave the reigns to a 30-year old New Zealand filmmaker Neill Blomkamp and boy did it pay off. Politically aggressive, radically racial and devastatingly dramatic, DiSTRiCT 9 is one of those rare achievements that confronts just about everything our world is confused about and does so by way of stunning SFX! Ranks up with other political satires Stanley Kubrick's DR. STRANGELOVE (1964) and Paul Verhoeven's STARSHiP TROOPERS (1997). Come celebrate the One Year Anniversary for this brilliant, underrated UK Action/Horror/Comedy! Sharply directed, hilariously executed and metaphorically maximized, this Edgar Wright produced British lil' ditty was sadly overlooked in the States, due to it getting released at the same time as J.J. Abrams' wonderfully nostalgic SUPER-8 and Jon Favreau's muddled COWBOYS & ALiENS (which had 8 credited screenwriters!). Many critics bashed the film beyond belief for it's complicated pre-teen anti-heroes and it's realistic slang dialogue. It probably didn't help that the London riots erupted at exact same time as the film's release. Like Edgar Wright's SCOTT PiLGRiM VS. THE WORLD, the film has found a contemporary cult following and you don't want to miss your chance to this brilliant genre flick on the big screen. Preceded by a handful of John Carpenter trailers that feel like literal influences on the film! 88 minutes.
