John Carpenter's existential remake of Howard Hawks' low budget quickie hauntingly combines the xenophobia of the entire 1950s sci-fi genre with a near-prophetic look at a pre-HIV/AIDS 1980s era. Kurt Russell (who gives the performance of his career) leads the way as twelve male scientists (who are isolated in the middle of Antartica) slowly lose trust in their fellow man. With jaw dropping SFX (Rob Bottin), spooky cinemascope cinematography (the almighty Dean Cundey) and one of the greatest minimalist electronic soundtracks ever (Ennio Morricone) this apocalyptic paranoia prediction culminates in a hypnotic futuristic western that resonates even more in 2012. Concluding our evening of being "stranded with a buddy" is this post-apocalyptic cult-classic which follows a boy (ruthlessly played by a 26 year old Don Johnson) in the year 2024, who can communicate telepathically with his dog. As the two scavenge and scrape for whatever food and sex they can find in this sci-fi/western black comedy, their pathetic existence is questioned when they stumble onto an underground Utopian society. This wonderfully mean-spirited exploration of our country's Dystopian "future" will have you talking for weeks following especially due to the newly struck 35mm print courtesy of Fine Line Pictures!
