man

Released on the the same weekend as Michael Bay'sTrans4ormers: Age of Extinction, South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's adaptation of a 1982 French graphic novel (Le Transperceniege) managed to achieve critical and even financial success due to its whipsmart script and memorable character development. It will no doubt end up on countless Top 10 lists and here is your chance to experience this unstoppable and unrelenting contemporary cult classic in the country's greatest movie theatre! Casting the memorable Chris Evans (Captain America) as the the leader of the revolution in a post-global warming apocalypse is beyond subversive, while delivering juicy roles for one of Korea's most important actors Song Kang-ho (J.S.A., The Host) and art-house favorite Tilda Swinton (as the year's best baddie) will leave you gasping for air by the jaw-dropping conclusion! With a haunting score by Marco Beltrami and consistently claustrophobic camerawork, this kind of profound genre entry is an absolute throwback to flicks like Douglas Trumbull's Silent Running (1972) and John Carpenter's Dark Star (1974). Bring in the new year right with a film that provoked audiences to outright cheer in every screening I attended! Preceded by 35mm trailers of epic train battles. DCP print courtesy of The Weinstein Company. Rated R. Running Time: 126 minutes.

9:45pm - RUNAWAY TRAiN (1985)
(30th ANNIVERSARY 35MM SCREENING!)

Directed by ?????? ???????????? (Andrei Konchalovsky)
Produced by Menahem Golan, Yoram Globus
Containing Jon Voight, Eric Roberts, Rebecca De Mornay, Hank Worden, Danny Trejo

no pain
With two documentaries coming out celebrating the Cannon Group B-movie studio, MiDNiTES FOR MANiACS is proud to present the 30th Anniversary of Golan/Globus' greatest film! Based on a story idea by Akira Kurosawa, director Andrei Konchalovsky (who worked with Russian master Andrei Tarkovsky) brings a unique combination of fist-pounding action insanity with a dark, foreboding existentialism that rarely is achieved in art cinema much less B-movie Hollywood. With an absolute off-the-wall performance by both Jon Voight and Eric Roberts combined with stunning camerawork by Alan Hume (who worked with Guy Green on David Lean's 1946 adaptation of Great Expectations) is one reason why film critic Michael Phillips has hailed it as "The most underrated film of the 1980s." Not since Buster Keaton's The General (1926) has there been a film that cared about the inner and outer machinery of trains and was only recently rivaled by Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger as the greatest train chase in cinema history.

This RARE 35mm screening is an event that you will truly regret missing, especially since immediately following the film will be a SPECiAL EVENT consisting of a countdown of my favorite Cannon Film 35mm trailers, including genre flicks about breakdancing, chainsaws, Vietnam War, Jean-Claude Van Damme & supernatural swirly stuff! 35mm print courtesy of Park Circus. Rated R. Running Time: 111 minutes.
