7:15pm - REALiTY BiTES (1994)
Written by Helen Childress; Directed by Ben Stiller
Containing: Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn & Ben Stiller
home

Ben Stiller's directorial debut perfectly captured the trials and tribulations of the Gen X 20somethings. But ironically, this mini-masterpiece was released right at the end of the era's cusp causing many of the very people who would have related to it, to skip it. Winona Ryder's performance as Lelaina easily evokes a Molly Ringwald-esque timelessness while Ethan Hawke's cringing, grunge/slacker Troy is perhaps even more relevant for today's hipsters. But show-stealer hands down is the almighty Janeane Garofalo in her feature film debut! Showcasing her love for disco, wacked-out costume choices and sporting those killer-bangs, she seemed to tap into (and even pave the road for) the "Grandma-phase" for generations to come. Come prepared to sing some serious early-90s classics by Dinosaur Jr., Juliana Hatfield & Lisa Loeb! Preceded by some priceless grunge-era trailers. Newly struck 35mm print courtesy of Universal Pictures. 99 minutes. Rated PG-13

9:30pm - MY OWN PRiVATE IDAHO (1991)
(20th ANNiVERSARY SCREENiNG!)

Written & Directed by Gus Van Sant
Containing: River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, Flea, Grace Zabriskie & James Russo

home
Defining an entire generation of outcasted 20something Pacific Northwest nomads, Gus Van Sant's ode to Shakespeare's audaciously complex character Falstaff is seriously one of the greatest films of the 1990s, period. Setting the film in Van Sant's hometown of Portland, these flannel wearing, freewheeling slackers led by teen heartthrobs River Phoenix & Keanu Reeves (who both deliver legendary performances) gave a voice to an overlooked community that may have never been so sensitively represented in a feature film. Perhaps the only genuinely "grunge" film of the era is also a hauntingly profound homage to 1969's Best Picture Midnight Cowboy as well as a direct knockoff of Orson Welles' unavailable masterpiece Chimes at Midnight (1966). Combining iambic pentameter, astoundingly picturesque visuals and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gus Van Sant flat-out changed the lives of thousands with this Queer classic. Don't miss this RARE 35mm screening print courtesy of Warner Brothers. Preceded by other upcoming M4M events. 104 minutes. Rated R.

11:30pm - FREEWAY (1996)
(15th ANNiVERSARY SCREENiNG!)
Written & Directed by Matthew Bright
Containing: Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Bokeem Woodbine, Brittany Murphy, Amanda Plummer & Brooke Shields

homeNow that both Reese Witherspoon & Kiefer Sutherland have become main staples in Hollywood, it's time to take a trip back to this vicious, horrifying and even brilliant reinterpretation of Little Riding Hood. The screenwriter of Richard Elfman's schizophrenic 1982 film Forbidden Zone, stopped at nothing when creating this, his directorial debut! Wicked satire combined with some truly jaw-dropping & over-the-top performances (by both Kiefer Sutherland and a 19-year-old cracked-out Reese Witherspoon) mixed in with some truly thought-provoking & grotesque sequences (on par with Mary Harron's American Psycho, 2000), this nasty lil' roughie will have your teeth grinding together long after it's over. Throw in an epic soundtrack by Danny Elfman and you've got yourself a modern-day cult classic! Very RARE 35mm screening with print courtesy of the Roxie Distribution. Preceded by some wonderfully psychotic 1990s trailers. Rated R.
