man

With the 2008 Presidential Election looming in the wings, the Nolan brothers took aim at America's counter-intuitive political landscape and the result... has defined a generation. While this darker-than-black, neo-noir reboot of DC's most famous vigilante was defiantly ignored by the Academy Awards for a Best Picture nod, Heath Ledger's all-encompassing performance as The Joker -- inspired by Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs (1928) and Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange (1971) -- won him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. His tragic and unexpected death months before the film's summer release created a massive cult following for both the actor and the film (quite similar to James Dean's death in 1955) and it hasn't let up since. Do not miss your chance to (re)experience this magnus-opus projected from a widescreen 35mm print, showcasing Wally Pfister's breathtaking shot-on-film camerawork combined with Hans Zimmer's unparalleled brain-pounding score. Not only has the film held up over the past six years, be prepared to dig into a whole batch of bold and profound themes. 153min. 35mm print courtesy of Warner Brothers. RATED PG-13 for "intense sequences of violence and some menace." Preceded by other "Dragon Chasing" trailers.

9:45pm - REiGN OF FiRE (1999)
(15th ANNIVERSARY WiDESCREEN 35MM SCREENING!)

Directed by Rob Bowman
Containing Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Gerard Butler

no pain
I have been dreaming of screening this post-9/11, over-the-top, monster-mash since the day it left theatres in 2002. Coined by critics at the time as a $60 million dollar B-movie, this off-the-wall horror film showcases one of Matthew McConaughey's most memorable performances as he attempts to single handedly battle an entire harem of fire-breathing dragons. And yet, this unstoppable SFX extravaganza teams him up with both a Dark Knight (Christian Bale) and a Gladiator (Gerard Butler) lensed by unsung hero Adrian Biddle, the cinematographer for James Cameron's ALiENS (1986), Paul W.S. Anderson's EVENT HORiZON (1997) and the Wachowski's V FOR VENDETTA (2006). Not to mention a set design that even present-day giant-monster flicks need to go back and emulate. This is gonna be one helluva rock 'em, sock 'em good time so do not miss this RARE 35MM SCREEENiNG in widescreen no less! 101min. RATED PG-13 for "intense action violence." Preceded by trailers for upcoming M4M events.
