Paul Verhoeven caused so much controversy with this exploration of disaffected youth and their obsession with dirt bike racing (in the outskirts of Southern Holland) that he shortly packed up his realism and headed for Hollywood. With strong thematic parallels to Jonathan Kaplan’s OVER THE EDGE and John Badham’s (R-Rated version of) SATURDAY NiGHT FEVER, this extremely RARE screening of the Unrated Dutch version showcases a pre-BLADE RUNNER Rutger Hauer and a performance by Renée Soutendijk that you will never forget. DCP w/ English subtitles courtesy of EYE Film. Unrated. 120 minutes.

starship-troopersMisunderstood by nearly every critic upon release 20 years ago, Paul Verhoeven’s follow-up to SHOWGIRLS ranks alongside Stanley Kubrick’s DR. STRANGELOVE (1964) as the greatest satire of war ever made. Hyper-violent and hypnotically subversive, Screenwriter Ed Neumeier’s facist-allegory brilliantly uses 90210-type acting to emphasize the obliviousness of a society to be brainwashed into committing absolute genocide. Surrealist filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (EL TOPO) considers STARSHiP TROOPERS to be the only great American film of the past 30 years. WARNING: Film includes excessive blood and massive amounts of insect & human guts.) 35mm print. Rated “Hard” R. 129 minutes.
