March 18, 2017

Do the Right Thing
7:00 pm

Released in 1989, Rated R, 120 minutes long

Directed by Spike Lee
Cinematography by Ernest Dickerson
Containing Samuel L. Jackson, Danny Aiello, John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn

Spike Lee’s third feature is one of the greatest films ever made. This masterpiece hilariously explores the intricate casual details of a day in the life in Brooklyn’s “Bedstuy” neighborhood. Led by Lee himself as Mookie, a pizza delivery boy, each actor brilliantly created their own three-dimensional character within their own respective cultures. Danny Aiello received an Oscar nod for his electrifying performance as Sal, an Italian pizzeria owner, while Lee was nominated for his (still) poignant script. Cinematographer Ernest Dickerson and the multi-cultural cast emphasizes many of our society’s most relevant conflicts, making DO THE RiGHT THiNG an essential and universal film to watch, discuss and ultimately celebrate (Spike Lee turns 60 on Monday the 20th!) Preceded by 35mm trailers of other Spike Lee joints. Newly restored DCP. Rated R. Running Time: 120 minutes.

Crooklyn
9:30 pm

Released in 1994, Rated PG-13, 115 minutes long

Directed by Spike Lee
Containing Alfre Woodard, Delroy Lindo, Zelda Harris

Spike Lee’s seventh feature is the perfect follow up to DO THE RiGHT THiNG, exploring Lee’s own childhood in “Bedstuy” cira 1972. With one of the greatest 1970s soundtracks filling every moment of the film, this unstoppably enjoyable coming-of-age passage follows nine-year-old Troy (Zelda Harris) as she deals with her meddling brothers, zany neighbors and her lovingly complicated parents (beautifully performed by Alfre Woodard & Delroy Lindo). Feeling like Francois Truffaut, Spike Lee created his most loving film with this mini-masterpiece. Preceded by 35mm trailers of other Spike Lee joints. Original 35mm Print. Rated PG-13. Running Time: 115 minutes.
