Punk GrrrL Triple Feature @ Castro
Hey Maniax,
Thanx to all of you who came out to the Roller-Disco Triple Feature last month! It not only was a huge success (it really was difficult finding a seat!), I've never been with such an appreciative & enthusiastic crowd in all my movie-going life! (Cell-phones are the new lighters!)
SO, we've got ourselves another "Freeky Friday" coming up at San Francisco's only Movie Palace...
The Castro Theatre. And in my continuation of empshasizing forgotten, overlooked & dismissed films from the 1970's/1980's, suck on this triple feature...

Punk GrrrL Triple Feature
7:30pm
VALLEY GIRL
1983 - Directed by Martha Coolidge (REAL GENIUS)
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman, Elizabeth Daily, Michael Bowen, Cameron Dye
Our Punk Grrrl Triple Feature begins with Martha Coolidge's under-appreciated New Wave love story. A Valley girl (Foreman) falls for a punk (Cage) but has to choose between her stuck-up Val-friends and true punk love in this pre-John Hughes T&A classic. Nicolas Cage gives one of his most sincere performances while singer Elizabeth Daily steals the show with her bo-dacious bod! Flat 35mm print.
9:45pm
THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN
1985 - Directed by Matthew Robbins (CORVETTE SUMMER)
Cast: Helen Slater, Christian Slater, Keith Gordon, Richard Bradford,
Peter Coyote
This Joan of Arc analogy is one of the most overlooked films of the eighties! Defending herself from being raped, 17 year-old Billie Jean (Helen Slater) cuts her hair punk, rips up her girly clothes and runs away from home, bringing along her little brother (played by an unknown Christian Slater). With the police hot on their trail, teenagers from every city help hide the two runaways and in return, Billie Jean inspires them to stand up against abusive adults. You will be chanting Pat Benatar's Invincible-anthem all the way home! (Not on DVD) Flat 35mm print.
11:59pm (Midnite)
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS
1981 - Directed by Lou Adler (UP IN SMOKE)
Cast: Diane Lane, Ray Winstone, Peter Donat, David Clennon, Laura Dern
"We're not gonna take it!" This landmark 80's punk classic co-written by Jonathan Demme, obviously sparked the "riot-grrrl" movement of the early-90's, yet somehow the film has never been released on vhs or DVD. An all-girl punk band (featuring Diane Lane & Laura Dern) run away from home, stick it to the male-dominated punk scene, and then find themselves in the middle of the media-crazed world they had hated in the first place. Flat 35mm print.
NOTE: This is the last print in existence from Paramount of this subversive and utterly devastating look at personal revolutions and selling-out to the mainstream and may be the final theatrical screening. Miss this… and cry. (Not on DVD)
